About this camp

UCLA Astronomy Live's Summer Observing Workshop offers high school students a unique introduction to scientific research in observational astronomy. Participants engage in a nine-week program where they conduct a small research project focused on astrophysical objects. This involves using real data from telescopes located around the world and in space. The workshop aims to provide hands-on experience in scientific inquiry, data analysis, and presentation skills, culminating in a 5-10 minute presentation of their project's procedures and findings. The program is led by UCLA graduate students earning their Ph.D.'s in astronomy, providing students with direct mentorship and exposure to advanced academic pursuits.

Students will gain skills in observational astronomy, data reduction, and basic coding in Python. The workshop emphasizes critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and problem-solving, preparing students for future STEM endeavors. Computer access is provided, and the program is entirely free to attend, with priority given to rising juniors and seniors who demonstrate a desire to pursue science in college or as a professional career.
